Protect yourself against the scourge of
fake headphones!
Sony, Creative, Bang and Olufsen, Shure, Sennheiser and many other lesser know brands have all been a victim of counterfeit products. You need to be aware of them so you don’t end up wasting your hard earned money, and enriching a bunch of thieves.
You didn’t think that I was recommending fake headphones, did you? No, this page is a collection of info and forum discussions that has been collected over the past few months on some of the most popular fake headphones there are on the market. So now you’ll know what you’re getting yourself into.
My Advice To You.
Even with these links and stories, my advice to you is simple: If in doubt, then go to the manufacturers website (and at the top of the page, you’ll see the ‘makers’ pages) and see if you can buy directly from them. The only alternative is to buy from the manufacturers specified retail and online outlets.
Biding on fakes.
Consider that if someone has a pair of fake headphones, someone might try and get rid of them, and promote them as ‘genuine’ in an attempt to get more than what they’re worth. It’s a win, win situation for them. Buy cheap, find out it’s fake, then sell them to some poor sucker for more money than they originally paid.
You might view this as some conspiracy theory, but I just want to make sure you get your moneys worth. And that’s another good point, money. With the exception of a few brands, Sennheiser springs to mind, is the price too good to be true? In the UK for example the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones retail at around £70, yet many imports are selling for less than half that. Here’s more info on how to spot a pair of fake Sony MDR-V700DJ (ebay.co.uk link)
Here’s some more information on the various fakes out there on the market. I’ve know doubt there are more fakes out there, but these are the most popular fake headphones on the market.

Fake Sennheiser CX300
Fake Sennheiser CX300’s seem to get the worst press. The CX300 are very popular and cheap, and so people looking for them are easy targets to rip off merchants.

Found this comment (below), but can’t remember from which site. I’ll try and find you the link. I like the comment at the end about the images.
I found some fake E2s on my last trip to Hong Kong. They are almost indistinguishable from the real thing upon looks alone. If you pick them up though, you can tell that the cable is different. It’s much softer. Even the “pod” and the plug are made of softer, rubbery plastic. No numerical stamp on the plug, of course. The wax filters are permanently glued on and are made of a papery-like material. So if anyone is suspecting that they received a pair of fake E2s, these are the signs to look for.
Also, remember that someone selling fake items online can post images of the real thing…
