So, which would you choose? AKG’s or JBL’s. Well, they’re one of the same thing, bar for a bit of leather here and there. Now where’s your money going to go? We at headphonedeals love the JBL’s (and the AKG’s) but for the sake of saving money, the JBL’s are a bit more comfortable. They’re not as open as the Sennheiser PX’s, but they dig far deeper than the PX’s when it comes to warm bass. I prefer them to the Sennheiser twins (PX100, PX200). And besides, there are far too many fake PX100 and PX200 headphones on the market.
Found this nice review on ebay. Enjoy!

Don’t be a slave to that ‘Click, Whir’ response.

I’m really, really getting the hots for the JBL 410 headphones as I’m sure you can tell by all the recent posts. Why? Because they can really kick butt, that’s why. I was wearing my Mylars last night, and remembered that Mrs headphonedeals had left the JBL’s on the back parcel shelf of the car. Fearing someone might decide to smash the window in a claim a free pair of JBL headphones, I went to the car to put hide them under the seat or something.
Having listened to the Mylars (brilliant little things) I thought that a change might do me good. Then it hit me, the openness and detail of the JBL’s were very apparent. The bass depth is a given, but I’d never thought that the JBL/AKG sound was open enough for me, but last night they were near perfect.
I can’t stress to you all how much you should buy the JBL’s over the Sennheiser twins. If you choose to let the ‘Click, Whirr‘ response of ‘going for the established and trusted name’ get in your way, you’ll miss out on a great sounding and just as cheap if not cheaper (when the wind is blowing in the right direction) headphones.

JBL 410, the best headphones you’ll never know about. Shame!

There’s one major problem that the JBL 410 have, and that’s the fact that no one really knows they exist. I blame JBL for this. However we at headphonedeals love ‘em. Based on the AKG K-27i headphones, the JBL headphones add a nice touch of class, a lovely piece of leather covering the headband. They can fold, as good as any PX100 or PX200 and you get a fair few extras with them, something you won’t get with either Sennheiser or the Grado iGrado.
The main thing is because they’re relatively unknown, they’re dirt-cheap, so take advantage while you can. Anyway here’s some info for you to chew on… …(chew on??).

AKG have redesignated their line of headphones, with K-24P becoming K-412P, K-26P K-414P, and K-27I K-416P.
The portable headphones have also lost their original colour schemes, repainted in dull greys.
But, luckily for those still craving the silver/black/yellow K-24P, they’re on sale from a few EBay stores, and for a good price too (it seems the release of “new” models by AKG has automatically discounted the “older’ twenty-series headphones).

K-24P are on sale from Rize Electronics and somewhat inapproriately named “Sony Items” EBay stores, each store selling them for US$17 (minus a few cents), plus shipping. And they ship worldwide. This is very cheap for headphones which are superior to AKG’s Germanic rival Sennheiser PX100. And a complete bargain for the kind of sound these small headphones can provide.
The K-24P is a direct competitor to Sennheiser PX100 and Koss Porta-Pro; it has a fuller, more lively sounding than the PX100 (the PX100 has that penchant for killing ambience and life in a record, making it sound like a combination of instruments rather than a musical performance), and more detailed than the Koss Porta-Pro. K-24P are foldable, just like the PX100 and Porta-Pro. A carry pouch is part of the package. Folded, they’re about the size of a small digital audio player (a bit smaller than folded sunglasses). Those are excellent small headphones with a cheerful, even bright, sound signature which were preferred to the K-240 Studio by some classical music lovers.

Generally regarded as superior to the PX100 and (especially) PX200 (which are quite a bit of shame to Sennheiser it seems), the K-27I are the closed counterpart to the K-24P. They certainly sound more muffled and more bassy than the K-24P (though that’s often considered a plus), but unlike the Sennheiser PX200, the K-27I also have an excellent seal and sound isolation. In an “inexpensive closed headphones” competition, the K-27I would win, together with Pioneer SE-MJ3B. They are also sold as the JBL 410 in the USA. K-27I are a modification of the K-26P with a built-in volume control (which although a potential source of distortion, some people like as it removes the need to reach for the player’s volume control).
Cheapest EBay price for the K-27I is $34, from Audio-Video Systems.

…are really the same model with minor cosmetic differences.
Both AKG and JBL are part of the Harman/Kardon international concern.
K-27i is essentially K-26P with an inline volume control, painted white. JBL 410 is the same, but in different colours and with a fake leather headband rest (K-27/K-26 headband is naked metal).
This, in reply to the “JBL 410 Vs. AKG K-26″ search hit.

Come and ask your question, on the new headphonedeals forum. Click here. I spent along time looking on forums before I had the Courage to join in. Your questions, view points, opinions, experiences are all very welcome and dare I say needed. I’m not the best educated when it comes to headphones, I’m just a guy with a hobby. Maybe you can teach me something new, in fact I know you can teach me something new.
Remember had it not been for people like yourself, sharing information, I wouldn’t have experienced half the headphones I now had. And, on top of that, I would have missed out! So come and join us, ask your question and show me something new.

PX100 vs JBL Review
Before I get into this, can I just say, That I appreciate that your budget might be tight, but can we all stop thinking Sennheiser PX100 and PX200 for that reason. The iGrado’s are far more rewarding, believe me as someone who owns quite a few portable headphones, The iGrado’s are the class leader, and nothing, and I mean nothing can touch them.

O.K. now I’ve got that off my chest, we can move on with a quick test. We’ll start with some music then move on to a film.
Starting with ‘Axwell - I Found You’ which is going down as a bit of a hit at the moment. The first thing I notice about the PX100’s is that I had the bass up full on the imac, and the Sennheiser’s didn’t like it. So at reasonable levels the PX100’s sound as good as always.
Sound staging is good, if not as detailed as the iGrado’s, but very good. The bass is distorted a little too much for my liking. This is something that the JBL’s will do well I suspect. Overall, the PX100’s sound a little harsh with this track.
Switching to the JBL’s The sound staging is good, but not as wide or as detailed as the Sennheiser, but with this track that’s not a bad thing. The forward presentation of the 410’s is very welcome here. It makes the PX100’s sound distant.
I could do with a touch more detail and separation from the JBL’s, but the bass is far deeper than the Sennheiser, and with a dance track like this, it’s what’s needed. And the JBL Reference 410 headphones can handle the volume, and handle it well!
An oldie for you ‘Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal’. Lets begin with the JBL 410’s. The lack of definition on the highs and midrange is making Michael sound very flat. The sound staging is good, but it needs to be wider.
Switching to the Sennheiser, the difference in detail, is like night and day, but so is the lack of weight. The wider sound staging is better for the backing vocals, now you can enjoy there contribution to the song.
To the movies

Track four, where the Star Fleet are attacking the Borg Cube. This falls in favor of the JBL’s for the bass weight. You can hear and feel everything, even the sound of the Enterprise Engine. The Sennheisers are good in their usual way, but in such a film, you need some bass!
Conclusion
The Sennheiser PX100 and the JBL Reference 410 headphones are completely different animals. Although on the surface, they are both portable headphones, the JBL’s display a much fuller sound. The Sennheiser tend to sound thin and weedy, however, they pick up finer details that the JBL’s just can’t cope with.
It’s an easy decision. If you want a full sounding headphone, pick the JBL Reference 410’s. If you want fine detail, and you’re willing to sacrifice a lot of bass weight in your sound, then it’s the PX100’s or the iGrado’s.
AKG vs Ultrasone

Someone has asked for ‘akg vs ultrasone’. The only AKG’s I have are the AKG K27i’s and the JBL 410’s (AKG K27i’s in drag..so to speak).
The only Ultrasone’s I have are the lovely Proline 750’s and the (bling bling baby) Ultrasone iCans. I’m assuming whoever was looking for ‘akg vs ultrasone’ was referring to the K27i’s and the iCans.<
For the purpose of this quick test, I'm going to use the JBL Reference 410 headphones in place of the AKG K27i's. I've packed the K27i's away (for the house move), but the 410's are basically the same headphones, but with a fancy leather headband.

Sound Test
Oh, I’ll have to take off my RP21’s now……shame! First Let’s turn to the JBL’s/AKG’s with an old classic, ‘Axel F - Harold Faltermeyer’.
The JBL’s/AKG’s certainly make their presence felt……. actually that make me think of the joke.
How does Darth Vader know what Luke has brought him for Christmas? Because he’s felt Luke’s presents!
O.K. on with the review. The JBL’s bass depth certainly makes itself known. For a pair of headphones this size, in terms of bass, nothing, and I mean nothing can touch it. In fact the JBL’s have more bass thump than most full size headphones in my collection.
The rest of the sound struggles, especially the midrange. Also that ‘closed in’ feeling doesn’t do this track any favors. I’ll try something else with the JBL’s, I’ll Try ‘Coldpaly - Clocks’.
Again, it’s not the widest sound staging, but Chris Martin (lead singer) is very central. Even with the backing vocals, it just feel a bit ……on dimensional. But you can’t deny the weight and authority the JBL’s have. Want to blast your ears into next week? the JBL’s are for you, and that’s why I chose them.
If you want to adjust the headband length on the Ultrasone iCans, then start weight training, now! This is interesting because with my recent ear infection, I haven’t really spent much time with these. Yeah right!
Let’s go back to ‘Axel F’. The two words that conjure up the iCans sound are, ‘distant’ and ‘recessed’. Don’t get me wrong, they are near perfectly detailed for a sub £60 headphones ($129 in the US), but it’s like your listening to the music from two fields away.
‘Axel F’ is more detailed than the JBL’s, the sound staging is as open as a field, but you just want more. It never quite produces enough. Not enough forwardness, not enough volume come to think enough, you just end up screaming for more. The detail and weight are about as good as it gets, but the midrange is stifled and lacks any finesse.
Over to ‘Coldpaly’ and once again the detail is almost perfect, but the overall sound suffers at the hand of the midrange. The midrange shows itself better than it did with ‘Axel F’, but the performance is too disjointed. You get the sense that somethings not quite right with the iCans.
The Ultrasone iCans offer great detail, and that’s how I want to end this sound test, on a good note for the iCans. The JBL/AKG’s can’t match the iCans detailed sound.
Conclusion
I love the iCans, they are stunning to behold, they really are. In terms of looks there’s nothing like them, and they are a very satisfying ownership prospect. But with the JBL’s/AKG’s being nearly a quarter of the price (in the US) of the Ultrasones, your left with a large question mark hanging over the iCans.
The JBL’s/AKG’s bass rules! it’s kicks like nothing else at the price or size. But you get the feeling that’s the only talent the JBL’s have. The closed sound you’ll either love or hate. But in this test and because of the price, it’ll be hard to ignore! They do shout, and they’re shouting ‘buy me instead of the iCans’.
I’m the weak one here, so I’ll leave the decision making for you, but let me just end by saying how much I love the Ultrasone iCans, and owning them is a bit more satisfying than owning the JBL’s!
Now can I get back top my RP21’s please?

JBL Reference 410 review
It’s amazing how a simple piece of leather can change your whole listening experience!

So what’s the difference in sound between the JBL Reference 410 and the AGK K27i headphones? Well, I think you already know the answer to that. There’s no real difference in the sound, but that doesn’t mean that the JBL’s are the same headphones. a bit cryptic, but keep reading.

Compared to the AKG K27i’s which I brought to broaden my horizons, the JBL’s look a bit more complete. By simply putting a leather headband on, the JBL now feels like a full size pair of headphones. The AKG’s headband is exposed, and although it presents no real problem, it just reminded me of the Koss Porta pro’s.
The JBL’s are also in a class above the triplets (Sennheiser PX100/200 and iGrado), because of the full presentation, especially when it comes to the bass. A few AKG fans have told me that the K26p is a good cheaper alternative to the K27i’s, but the JBL’s still get my vote.
Price wise, RRP is $79, but being headphonedeals, you’re here to steer away from such high prices. But that still puts the JBL’s $10 above the PX200’s, $20 above the PX100’s and $30 over the iGrado’s.
Unfortunately, The JBL Reference 410’s doesn’t seem to be available in the UK, and so ebay would be your obvious choice, if you’re in the same predicament as me. Availability is very intermittent.
Comfort
This is where I feel the JBL’s and K27i’s Achilles heel might be, and I would point the finger at the clamping effect. Don’t get me wrong, it’s most welcome occasionally, but after a few minutes, you’ll start to feel the edges around the ear cup.
Verdict? A pass, but it’s not going to win “the most comfortable headphones” award any time soon. In that respect you might want to down grade a little and go for the iGrado’s.
Stuff
The JBL’s and AKG’s fold nicely into a neat little package which came in handy in my recent trip to Prague. And guess what? I used the specially made carrying, pouchy thing.

The Reference 410’s also came with an Airplane adapter, but to be honest, as I found out, I don’t think a plane is the JBL’s natural habitat.<

Oh, before we move on, please remember the volume control on the cord. It took me two days, of screaming at itunes and my Go-Vibe V5 amp, to finally realize that when I took them out of the box, the volume control was on the lowest setting.

Well-done me!
How do they sound?
For this test I’m going to put them up against an old favourite of mine, the Sennheiser HD212’s. Why? Because I feel like it O.K.
No, really the reason is that on the price deals they’re around the same price. Also, when it comes to delivering bass, the Triplets (Sennheiser PX100/200 and iGrado) just can’t compete. They do sound a bit more open, which is why I’ve brought in the HD212’s, but other than that, the JBL’s leave the Triplets behind.
Lets make this fairly quick. One electronic track, one rock track, one vocal, or something like that.
We’ll start with Tenacious D - Wonderboy. For the sake of time, lets call this both the rock and vocal track.
Sennheiser HD212
The opening guitars sound detailed enough, with the dominant guitar coming from the upper left hand-side. The drums kick in the center, but I could do with a bit more definition on them. But, you can still hear the left hand guitar above the drums. Not in terms of volume, but in terms of sound staging. It’s a good opening. Again, when Jack Black starts the vocals, the sound staging is good, but it’s not like the iGrado’s for example, which just slams the vocals dead center, with such clarity. The vocals get lost in the music somehow.
You see, or you hear, at the beginning of verse two, when Jack’s speaking, all is well, but when it gets into the rest of the verse, the vocals loose their bite. I could do with a better control and a bit more depth on the bass as well. Some can’t take the bass of the HD212’s, because they feel it’s overpowering. I say bring it on. In all seriousness though, I’ve put HD212’s against rival headphones, and despite the bass, the Sennheiser’s always had a touch more detail. Generally, the Sennheiser’s give a good balance.
JBL Reference 410 headphones (well of course you know they’re headphones)
This’ll be interesting, as this is the first time I’ve compared the two together. The guitars in the open sequence are a little harder, a touch less detailed, but they are in ya face. With the Sennheiser’s, you can feel the space, with the JBL’s you feel the guitar is right by your ear. There’s not the same detail in the depth as the HD212’s.
Starting with the vocals, Jack fairs better with the JBL’s. He doesn’t seem to lose his position. Hands up it could be a lack of concentration on my behalf, but jack doesn’t get swallowed up in the music. The highs are……. they seem rolled off. They’re not quite hitting the same highs with the type of detail that the Sennheiser’s have. And the bass? It’s better controlled than the Sennheiser’s, if not as deep, but you could live with it.
Round 1: With this track, the Sennheisers sound more detailed, and sound staging is better, but the bass would become fatiguing after a while. The JBL’s are easier to live with, if not as comfortable as the HD212’s.
I’m afraid the Sennheiser’s detail shines through, even if the sound staging for the vocals don’t.For the Electronic piece, lets try Orbital - The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
JBL Reference 410 headphones
1:14 minutes into the track, lets take it from there (the track is 10:27 minutes) The heart beat bass line is clear and provides enough depth. Maybe ‘Wonderboy’ wasn’t the right track for the JBL’s, because the bass is singing now.
The highs are better, but they still sound restrained a little bit. But, the JBL 410’s handle the complexity of the track very well. Separation is good and the balance between the lows, mids and highs are very good.
The JBL’s are also have great control at high volume levels, never distorting. With several Orbital tracks, some headphones give up the ghost, but the JBL 410’s take things in their stride.
Sennheiser HD212
Wow, the Sennheiser’s sound as though they’ve taken a chill pill (excuse the Expression). They’re more relaxed, and like the JBL’s they can handle the volume as well. Having said that, they don’t produce the same ear splitting volume levels that the JBL’s can on this track.
But with the Sennheiser’s, the mids and highs are more pronounced than the lows, which is a surprise. Not to say the HD212’s are bass shy, but the bass doesn’t come through as much as the JBL’s.
Again, with the sound staging the HD212’s fair a little bit better. Hearing the odd sound here and there, you can better define where they are. At 6:10 minutes, the organ (as I call it) is in the top left hand corner again.
Let’s quickly stop there.
Round 2, is up to you:
The detailed performance goes to Sennheiser, but I enjoy the up-front presentation of the JBL’s. For volume the JBL’s have it, but for easy to live with listening, it’s back to the Sennheiser’s.
Conclusion from the test
Its either detail or in ya face performance. It’s either large comfortable headphones that would be suitable for public appearances or small, portable and not so comfortable headphones that would be fine, meeting the general populous.
Final Thoughts
I think it’s simple, if you are looking for something above the usual portable headphones, then the JBL’s should be on your list. Despite the figures, they deliver a much fuller sound.
Just by adding a proper headband, I think JBL have turned an ordinary pair of headphones, into something much better. But, it has to be what you want out of a pair of headphones.
They do get a lot of use from me, and not just because they’re my ‘new’ headphones, it’s because they’re a neat package that can really kick some. The JBL Reference 410’s probably won’t be your obvious choice, but they will reward you if you do choose them.
