Headphones tested on my fellow Drawing and Image Making Students.
This wasn’t supposed to be a test, but with most of the headphones being around the same (UK) price range, I thought it would be interesting to see which headphones they would take home. The headphone list includes:

Natalie liked the Sennheiser HD650’s of course, and the Denon AH-D301. She also took a liking to the Grado iGrado’s. The Kam KHP 1500 headphones were a bit too heavy (weight) for her. Can’t remember what Natalie said about the AKG’s.

Jamie loved the Kam KHP 1500 headphones, and spent most of his time with them. He said that he preferred the bass on his Sennheiser HD202, than the HD212. The AKG K518 were too heavy in the bass for him. Jamie didn’t think much of the Denon’s. But one surprise was that Jamie liked the Ultrasone iCans!

New Denon AH-C252. A few pictures for you.

The new entry level Denon AH-C252 are very good on first impressions. However, I’ve had them burning in for less than 30 minutes (listening to Michael Jackson ‘Man In The Mirror’ at the moment). In the UK, these are less than a pair of replacement ipod earphones.
Denon AH-C252 vs Ultimate Ears Metro.fi 100
Quickly ’cause I’ve got to see a man about a dog. The Denon’s are forward sounding compared to the UE’s. The UE’s sound more grounded, the bass is firmer. Listening to Public Enemy - Bring The Noise, which is a fairly fast track, the vocals are very enhanced compared to the Metro.fi 100’s. However the highs are rolled off with the Denon’s where as the Metro.fi’s are more generous. The bass is also slightly deeper than the 252’s.
Gotta go, but I’m gonna let the Denon’s burn in for a few days, then later, you’ll get a full run down. As for now, its the Ultimate Ears Metro.fi 100 is where my money would go on.
Oh, final thing, The AH-C252’s have the most secure felling of any IEM I’ve ever had! Maybe that’s something to thing about for all you joggers out there!
Over 65% price slash for Denon AH-D501 (left) and Denon AH-d301 (right) headphones. This price cut is huge and I mean huge. This is your chance to get a great sound for almost a third of the retail price. This is a big headphone deal!
I got mine, where’s yours? This is a chance to get away from the usual names and go for some decent sound at a very affordable price. The sound (taking my 301’s into consideration) is nothing but first class. Very detailed, but they are a touch light when it comes to bass.
£13.53 - Denon AH-D301 - Currently. Hurry!
The headband is the only downside to these headphones, but the sound is crystal clear, and I mean crystal clear for the price. And at the new price deal, you’ll struggle to do better.

Looks like Denon has gone offensive this year.
Scores of canalphone releases, releases of minor updates like AH-D1001, AH-D301, AH-D501 - all designed to draw attention to Denon. AH-P372 “trendy white” and “male black” “portable” headphones - designed to appeal both to the “IPod” crowd and the “more serious” listeners; a distribution deal with Headroom; and now this…
Denon AH-NC732.
Active noise-cancelling headphones from Denon. This Crave post puts the AH-NC732 as a straight Bose competitor. Other sites’ reviews mention how comfortable and liquid-sounding the AH-NC732 are - of which there shouldn’t be a doubt (those are, after all, Denon headphones, likely developed by Fostex).
The Crave post, however, has some mistakes… First, the
AH-D-”thousand” series - AH-D1001, AH-D2000, AH-D5000
- are as comfortable on the go as at home (the Crave editor
called them “home” headphones), and the low
impedance/high efficiency of Denon’s audiophile line makes
the “thousand” series work flawlessly with any, even the
most underpowered, portable player. Second, Denon is a
longtime headphone manufacturer - although they weren’t
as aggressive a player on the Western market until recently.
There still are some Denon models released exclusively in Asia.

Sorry for the late reaction!
The Denon AH-P372 headphones are here, and all is well with the world again, especially because the seller J-Pop Store offers worldwide shipping. That’s what we like to see. And there’s one, equal price for all, apart form the shipping, which is also nice. However… I’m kind of sensing a bit of the ‘de ja vu’, a bit of ‘Separated At Birth’ effect.
The folding headband puts me in mind of the iLuv 501i headphones, whilst the arms and ear pads, makes me think about the iLuv 901i headphones.
But with that aside I think they look good. Whether the sound is as impressive as the design is something else. The 501’s didn’t make a big an impression than the much loved AH-D1000’s, so it’ll be interesting to hear them. They’re also available in a non-ipod color. Hope to get our hands on a pair soon!

In summary: AH-D501 are not a match to AH-D1000 or AH-D1001 (they cost half as much, too), but they’re an attractive set of headphones, with an excellent value for money (in Denon’s tradition), and will probably outperform the likes of Sennheiser HD215 and even HD280 (the isolation of AH-D501 is very nice - some true 12-18 dB). Those are clearly aimed at portable players, with a low impedance of 28 ohm (that can be a blessing or a problem, as lower-impedance headphones can be a difficult load for some amp chips) and excellent sound isolation with the usual comfort and light weight of Denon headphones.
But, they’re not the “cheap AH-D1000″. AH-D501 are quite far from the lifelike presentation and sparkle of AH-D1000. They are similar to AH-D1000 in resolution. Breath and movement of musicians in an acoustic jazz record can be heard in the AH-D501. But, someone accustomed to the AH-D1000 and looking for a similar set of headphones will be disappointed. Indeed, nothing but the AH-D1000 (or AH-D1001, AH-D2000, or even AH-D5000) will suffice to those used to the AH-D1000. Denon AH-D1000 are that magical.
The AH-D501 are a good closed alternative to Grado SR60, Sennheiser PX100 and the like open headphones in the same price range. Neutral, detailed and precise closed headphones, more akin to uncoloured monitors than cheery open headphones. Ironically, they’re what the Sennheiser PX200 promised to be (and failed miserably) - lightweight headphones with good sound isolation and powerful, clean sound.
Prices elsewhere are a still a bit too high, but some EBay stores stock AH-D501 at prices close to the Japanese MSRP of 5000 yen (that’s roughly 32 Euro or US$ 45). EBay merchant Ubuycheap stocks Denon headphones at a quite good price, though he’s out of AH-D501 stock at the time of writing. He also stocks AH-D1001, for a sale price much less than retail stores (probably a third less). He’d shipped the AH-D501 quickly and accurately outside the US, and all items he sells can be shipped internationally.

Denon, apparently, is striving to capture as much of the headphone market as possible.

White “portable” headphones.
And they’re foldable. And there’s a black-and-silver version.

Sensitivity: 100 dB
All of which makes them maybe a tad louder than the AH-D501, more amp-friendly, and also Denon’s first real supra-aural model for 2008. Japanese price is going to be around 5000 yen, which is roughly US$45 or 32 Euro, but - Denon.de already lists prices, and there it is peddled at 60-Euro MSRP.

First of all, they are as large as the Denon website photos have them. Here the package sits next to the AKG K-240 Studio. The packaging is very, very attractive - these headphones can easily sell with looks alone. Unlike AH-D501, the AH-D1000 are smaller than they seem to be on Denon website photos…
In this photo, the AH-D1000 set is on the right. The AH-D501 have smaller, 35mm diaphragms, but the enclosures are larger than those of the AH-D1000. This does help isolation - the AH-D501, when worn, provide a “what did you say?” level of sound isolation, unlike the AH-D1000, which don’t attenuate external sounds much.
Denon’s designating the AH-D501 as “on-ear” (synonym to “supra-aural”) is a tad misleading, as they’re actually circumaural (”over-the-ear”).
The AH-D501 have a “self-adjusting” headband/strap mechanism like AKG headphones. The headband, as most of the frame, is made of plastic (not magnesium as the AH-D1000). They’re a tad too loose-fitting, which is an oversight on Denon engineers’ behalf - the seal can also be somewhat too loose (not a joke as with the PX200, but still bleeding some sonic power), unless they’re worn with the headband over the top of the head, not diagonally over the front as intended by design.

Unfortunately I didn’t specify a colour, so although you see an image of a black pair, they might not be black, but they’ll still be Denon’s and that’s fine by us.

Over at AVForums, some poor person has just bought a pair of Skullcandy GI’s for £29.99 from play.com; not that there’s anything wrong with ordering from play.com, however I do have an issue with Skullcandy. Shame, because of the brand new Denon AH-D301 for around £25, which might be a wiser purchase.
The other suggestion is the Metro.fi 2 that are now going for under £30 at amazon.co.uk. That’s another good deal, but as I always say, get your money out quickly before the deal goes!
One pair was used for testing, the other pair has slight damage to the box, but neither reason is a bad thing. There’s no way I’d part with my metro.fi’s for less than £30.
