Looks like Denon has gone offensive this year.
Scores of canalphone releases, releases of minor updates like AH-D1001, AH-D301, AH-D501 - all designed to draw attention to Denon. AH-P372 “trendy white” and “male black” “portable” headphones - designed to appeal both to the “IPod” crowd and the “more serious” listeners; a distribution deal with Headroom; and now this…
Denon AH-NC732.
Active noise-cancelling headphones from Denon. This Crave post puts the AH-NC732 as a straight Bose competitor. Other sites’ reviews mention how comfortable and liquid-sounding the AH-NC732 are - of which there shouldn’t be a doubt (those are, after all, Denon headphones, likely developed by Fostex).
The Crave post, however, has some mistakes… First, the
AH-D-”thousand” series - AH-D1001, AH-D2000, AH-D5000
- are as comfortable on the go as at home (the Crave editor
called them “home” headphones), and the low
impedance/high efficiency of Denon’s audiophile line makes
the “thousand” series work flawlessly with any, even the
most underpowered, portable player. Second, Denon is a
longtime headphone manufacturer - although they weren’t
as aggressive a player on the Western market until recently.
There still are some Denon models released exclusively in Asia.

Fake Bose Triport IE headphones/earphones.
These three in particular, are the new bad boys on the block. You can often tell a fake, by the fact that the bidding or ‘Buy Now’ price starts as low as 1/4 of the original price. If the ‘Buy Now’ price is below half the retail price, then often enough it’s going to be a very nice (or not) replica, and some unscrupulous person is going to make off with your hard-earned.
Bose Triport IE
I don’t want to point the finger here, but I’ve seen Bose Triport’s starting at £19.99 when the retail is £69.00.
Audio-Technica ATH-ES7
The Audio-Technica ATH-ES7 headphones, you can usually get them for around $100 mark or less and that’s on a generous deal. But there are some that are starting at around the $40 mark.
Bang And Olufsen A8
The Bang and Olufsen A8 headphones….they should retail at £96.00 according to the British Airways highlife shop. abt.com have them at $160, yet they’re being banded about at the price as a movie ticket. I stress, this is for the A8 headphones.
My advice is always the same, Buy from a reliable source, like abt.com shop or audiocubes.com. You may pay full whack, but it’s the reassurance that what you’re hearing is the real deal.

Are These Real?
There have been many, many Bose Triport IE being sold for nearly a third of the original price. This seems worryingly low for a pair of Bose headphones/earphones. Without buying and testing a pair myself, I can’t say for sure, however I would be very suspicious of such headphones.
For your information here’s an article on fake Bose In Ear headphones. This is very, very important.

which is the best performer out of the Sennheiser HD25-1 vs Bose Triport OE? For me, the question is, which is the better portable headphones? Both are capable headphones, and small enough to go unnoticed when walking around town.

I’m going vintage again
My Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5EB’s have arrived, so whilst they warm up (I’ve been told anything up to 200 hours) lets see what’s happening on ebay.
To be honest not a lot, apart from the usual hoard from Sennheiser, Bose and Grado. if you’re a bit handy in the engineering department, then these Grado SR325’s (not 325i’s) are for you. they need touch of repair work, but they’re going for peanuts. Grab them, if you handy with the tools.
What about a good cheap classic pair of headphones. These HD450’s have sparked my interest this week, so once again , if you’re going to jump in with a bid, please don’t outbid me.
There seems to be an influx of classic bargains from the AKG corner. K141’s, K240’s and a great price on a pair of AKG K701’s, it seems to be a good week to get your chance for a pair of bargain AKG’s.
You could always do what I did, and buy a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5EB!

Can you tell I’m happy? Well after the dreadful affair with the iffy headband on the original Bose Triport headphones (now called the ‘around ear’) I’m gl;ad to say that the Bose are back in form of the Triport OE.
Unfortunately Mrs headphonedeals still hasn’t come back with the camera, so you’ll have to do with the image below. But you know me, I’ll be clicking away when I get the camera.
These are serious bass kicking headphones. Not even my Ultrasone Proline 750’s can compete for bass, but it’s not all good. More on that when I write a Bose Triport review.

With only a few hours, I had a chance to listen to and test the Bose IE earphones, and all was not well i’m afriad. The most fundamental problem was the poor fitting, making a review very hard.

Bose Triport IE Review

Preface
Let me start by saying how much I love the Bose Triport headphones. The Quiet Comforts usually steal all the press, but my favorite (if not for it’s build quality) is the original Bose Triport headphones, in ice blue.
I loved them so much that each time the headband broke, I forgave them and went to the shop, and they offered me a replacement, each and every time. After the forth pair gave up the ghost, the shop assistant advised me to take a pair of Grado’s instead. To this day I still love the original Bose Triport headphones, but have steered away from them for obvious reasons, but I miss them very much. The bass, although not that well controlled was deep, and no headphones I’ve tried, have compared, in terms of deep thumping bass.
Although the new Bose Triport OE (On Ear) headphones have better build quality (on the face of it), the design falls very short. Although a good compromise for both home and away use, they look a bit……samey.
The Bose Triport IE Review
This is a rushed review due to the short amount of time I had to find out as much as I could. Let me get straight down to what I think of the Bose IE earphones. There was one major problem that runs through and has hampered the whole review, but it is THE one fundamental issue I had with the Triport IE’s.
The main problem is that I couldn’t get them to stay in my ear, long or well enough to get a really good impression. The Bose are in no way uncomfortable, the rubber earbuds are comfy, but the whole design is strange at best. The earbuds give the impression that they’re facing sideways instead of forwards, and from just looking at the Bose IE’s, with the shape of the earbuds, I was wondering how they would stay in my ears.
Well as I said before, that wasn’t a worry because they didn’t really stay in my ears. The only way to really enjoy them, was to manually press them into my ear canal. As I’m sure you’re aware, you can’t do this for long for the simple reason that you need your hands for other things.
As soon as you let go, they gently ease themselves out of a good position, and just sit on the entrance to the ear canal. these would have been great as earphones, but as IEM’s, they just don’t work.
How do they sound?
Disappointing, especially the bass, because there was no bass! Having read reviews that suggest the bass was bloated, overpowering or uncontrolled I immediately thought that the bass would be deep and loud. It was neither. Listening to ‘Shimon - The Shadow Knows’ (my fav, and only drum and bass track) the Crossroad Mylars did far better.
The bass isn’t weak, but so faint that it’s not really easy to notice on any of the tracks I listened to. Where the Crossroads Mylar would thump with great control, the Bose would whimper along. Being a great lover of the bass from my Triports years (or months) I was shocked as to what I was hearing, or not hearing as such.
So why all those reports, referring to the bass as ‘overpowering’ and ‘bloated’. My thoughts were ‘How can such reviewers hear the bass, ’cause I can’t’. As for sound staging, once again because of the limited listening ability and time, there’s no real criticism with the sound staging. I would describe the sound as ‘powerful and purposeful’ rather than ‘finely detailed’.
Lindsey ( the Bose IE owner) agreed that the Crossroads Mylar’s offered better clarity, but luckily she got the Bose Triport IE’s free when She got her Bose Sounddock……..feeeew! Any exchanging of funds for the IE’s and I would advise that she’d take them back. After hearing the Mylar’s, I think that I’ve sown a seed, and she told me that maybe she’ll be on the lookout for different headphones.
Conclusion
I’m not convinced! Can you tell from the look on my face!
I can’t say that the Bose Triport IE’s are bad per se, but they are an acquired taste. Various reports say that Bose have redesigned the tips, and the new version would be on the market soon. But I heard it all before. When replacing my Triports because the headband kept on breaking, the shop assistant told me the same thing. Apparently they’d been redesigned. The truth was that I could see no visible evidence to support this, and the headband kept on breaking. Being re-launched under the name of ‘Bose around ear’ headphones, I still see no difference to the four pairs I owned. I hope that with the IE’s, Bose will re-launch a new version of the tips, because a small rubbery material could make all the difference.
If you still want a pair of the IE’s then I would encourage you to click on the ebay link on the right hand side, and save yourself a whole load of cash by bidding for a pair, or try amazon, It’ll save you some money. As for now, I just can’t give them my backing, sorry!
