Headphone cables are often treated with suspicion; this isn’t surprising as there’re many quite (or too) expensive cables out there. But, many listeners also are of the opinion that cables can’t make a difference, which is rather weird. Conductors are part of the signal path. Whereas the ideal amp is a “wire with a gain”, a set of headphones really is “diaphragms with conductors”.
A cable can also make a noticeable difference in clarity not because it’s anything too special, but because stock cables aren’t. Manufacturers usually look for ways to lower production costs, to increase profits and cut prices. Production costs scale - a 10 cents economy on a production run of a thousand units is an economy of $100. AKG’s stock cables are built of what someone called “cheap telephone wire” - not the finest copper.
Cable design and material affect how effortlessly an electrical signal is transmitted. An audio signal isn’t just a constant electrical signal, it’s modulated to have a flowing, rising/falling current. This shape has to mimic the shape of original sound waveform as close as possible: human listening is echoic and pays attention to the shape of sound waves more than to frequency range.
Sweetcome is a maker of audio cables based in Hong Kong, the “Diva” is his newest AKG mini-XLR cable.
It’s a bit of a mystery how he achieved it, but the new cable is an improvement on the older star-quad cable. The K-240 Studio have a kind of effortless transmission of music that obviously shows the audio formats and the players are the bottleneck, not the headphones. The dynamics aren’t just quick, they’re effortless, smooth, the music flows. It’s no longer down to divisions of soundstage or upper/mid/low frequencies, the music is as whole as the soundcard or player can reproduce it. As a tool, the K-240 now show all there is, and even better, they show what there isn’t: the lack of space in MP3 files, the cut high-frequency harmonics in CD audio, and so on.
AKG Diva cables are pricier than the regular star-quad cables; the cable sent in is 1.5 metres long, and costs $105. The cable has a stiff non-tangling plastic jacket, aluminium screening and is made of high-purity copper wire in a star quad layout. Regular star-quad Sweetcome AKG cables cost $50-60, depending on length ($50 for 2.5 metres, $55 for 3.5m), which makes them a better choice than AKG’s own stock cable (~$35 for 3 m., unarmoured, straight wire, unscreened).

So, which would you choose? AKG’s or JBL’s. Well, they’re one of the same thing, bar for a bit of leather here and there. Now where’s your money going to go? We at headphonedeals love the JBL’s (and the AKG’s) but for the sake of saving money, the JBL’s are a bit more comfortable. They’re not as open as the Sennheiser PX’s, but they dig far deeper than the PX’s when it comes to warm bass. I prefer them to the Sennheiser twins (PX100, PX200). And besides, there are far too many fake PX100 and PX200 headphones on the market.

…in which the Sweetcome cable for AKG Studio line of headphones is examined. Quick summary: well-built, durable, and with a magical effect on sound.
Not quite complete yet, but there it is.
The AKG K518 DJ headphones are coming to Headphonedeals, and in the near future they’ll be going up against the awesome Sennheiser HD212 headphones (one of my personal Sennheiser fav’s) and the newly-acquired and never talked-about Roland RH50 headphones (nicely balanced sound with Denon AH-D1000 type comfort).
Strangely enough, the K518DJ are basically a revamped version of the older K-81DJ headphones. There are a lot of companies that seem to be going through a lot of outward changes, but with no real discernible changes on the inside. Denon, Creative AKG, Ultrasone to name but a few seem to be updating their designs, but are doing very little with anything else.
So although you can get a pair of these well priced AKG K518 care of amazon.co.uk, you could also keep on with the K-81 headphones.

AKG have redesignated their line of headphones, with K-24P becoming K-412P, K-26P K-414P, and K-27I K-416P.
The portable headphones have also lost their original colour schemes, repainted in dull greys.
But, luckily for those still craving the silver/black/yellow K-24P, they’re on sale from a few EBay stores, and for a good price too (it seems the release of “new” models by AKG has automatically discounted the “older’ twenty-series headphones).
K-24P are on sale from Rize Electronics and somewhat inapproriately named “Sony Items” EBay stores, each store selling them for US$17 (minus a few cents), plus shipping. And they ship worldwide. This is very cheap for headphones which are superior to AKG’s Germanic rival Sennheiser PX100. And a complete bargain for the kind of sound these small headphones can provide.
The K-24P is a direct competitor to Sennheiser PX100 and Koss Porta-Pro; it has a fuller, more lively sounding than the PX100 (the PX100 has that penchant for killing ambience and life in a record, making it sound like a combination of instruments rather than a musical performance), and more detailed than the Koss Porta-Pro. K-24P are foldable, just like the PX100 and Porta-Pro. A carry pouch is part of the package. Folded, they’re about the size of a small digital audio player (a bit smaller than folded sunglasses). Those are excellent small headphones with a cheerful, even bright, sound signature which were preferred to the K-240 Studio by some classical music lovers.
Generally regarded as superior to the PX100 and (especially) PX200 (which are quite a bit of shame to Sennheiser it seems), the K-27I are the closed counterpart to the K-24P. They certainly sound more muffled and more bassy than the K-24P (though that’s often considered a plus), but unlike the Sennheiser PX200, the K-27I also have an excellent seal and sound isolation. In an “inexpensive closed headphones” competition, the K-27I would win, together with Pioneer SE-MJ3B. They are also sold as the JBL 410 in the USA. K-27I are a modification of the K-26P with a built-in volume control (which although a potential source of distortion, some people like as it removes the need to reach for the player’s volume control).

Both AKG and JBL are part of the Harman/Kardon international concern.
K-27i is essentially K-26P with an inline volume control, painted white. JBL 410 is the same, but in different colours and with a fake leather headband rest (K-27/K-26 headband is naked metal).

With all the holidays coming (Catholic & Orthodox Christmas, New Year, Saturnalia, whatnot…), a bit of reference for headphone prices ought to help.
Headphones are a great gift - hardly anything is as enjoyed by anyone as music, and many good headphones can bring joy, revealing details that were previously unnoticeable, and revealing the true power, energy of music.
Grado headphones have long been a staple for rock, jazz & blues listeners.
SR-60 have been considered one of the best values for money and one of the best choices for a portable player or listening without an amp.
SR-80 are a tad more expensive, but they’re also more comfortable, with larger ear cushions, and have a 4-conductor cable, which improves sounding.
Alessandro MS-1 are a custom-tuned version of the SR-80 produced by Alessandro, a New York-based company specialising in guitar amps and gear. Those are considered to be the best headphones at $100 mark for guitar listening (anything with an electric guitar - metal, rock, even jazz and blues).
IGrado are Grado’s newest product, and one that isn’t entirely made in the USA. The IGrado are a behind-the-neck design with SR-60 drivers. As the name indicates, they are aimed to work with portable players.
All Grado headphones are ventilated.

Denon doesn’t advertise itself much, but Denon is the oldest Japanese hi-fi maker (dating back almost a century, according to their own history).
Denon AH-D550 is the current entry-level model, with a modest price, but said to produce a “closed Grado SR-60 sounding”. Their low impedance and good sensitivity mean they’ll work well with anything - portable players, notebook computers, and of course amplifiers. A great gift for anyone, both for the receiver and for the producer of gift, especially by the price.

Note that shipping fees vary, so one store’s total price might turn out to be less than that of another.
Denon AH-D1000 are a step up in closed headphones, and quite possibly the best gift for someone who’s already owned hi-fi headphones. Again, those are an excellent value for money, and will bring out the smile in an audiophile.

Denon AH-C700 are the canalphone, in-ear model. It is a perfect match to any portable player. They have been compared to many high-end canalphones, and there are few that can compete in sound quality; as usual with Denon products, those cost a deal less than the competition.

AKG is an Austrian company producing professional sound recording equipment. AKG microphones and headphones have long been loved by professionals for their warm, yet concise and transparent sounding. AKG is famous for a musical sound signature with warm, open midrange and clean, yet unfatiguing treble.
The K-81DJ (K-518DJ in the new designation) are an appreciable gift, especially for a teenager or an aspiring DJ. Stylish looks, rubberised, durable paint, foldable and swivelling cups, a good efficiency and 32-ohm impedance. Sealed. They can be somewhat bass-heavy though - but for electronic music, this means they’ll be capable of reproducing even the heaviest analogue synth instruments, and low frequencies can always be toned down with equalisation.

K-171 and -141 Studio are closed and semi-open supra-aural (against-the-ear) mini-sized headphones. Those are headphones often used by female singers and pop stars, and could make a refined gift for anyone of the fair sex.

K-24P (K-412P), K-26P (K-414P) and K-27i (K-416P) are the current “mini” portable models. K-24P (K-412P) are open headphones with a full, forward, even bright sounding. Some classical music listeners love those as a portable set, as they present instruments with a good deal of clarity and excitement. K-26P (K-414P) and K-27i (K-416P) are the closed models, different in looks (mostly black for K-26P, and white for K-27i). They’re really the same model, except the K-27i (K-416P) has an inline volume control and comes in a box instead of a blister pack. K-27/K-26 are sealed headphones, providing a decent amount of isolation, and therefore appreciated by a city person who has to commute.

The K-240 Studio model is a derivation of the K-240 Monitor, a classic model commonly used at radio stations and in studios. The K-240 Studio are a more efficient version, rated at 55 ohms (against the old model’s 600), and have a 55-mm diaphragm. The K-240S are especially great for acoustic music, like jazz and classical music (a friend once admitted the first time he tried the K-240 in a store, he mistook piano for one being played in the same room), but deal well with anything they’re fed. At the $100-130 mark, those are perhaps the best choice among full-sized headphones, together with Equation Audio RP-21 and Denon AH-D1000. With a headphone amp, the K-240 become the ultimate portable headphone set, too.

K-271 Studio, while more expensive than the K-240 Studio, are perhaps one of the best sealed models in the market. They don’t have the same bass response as the K-240, but have a somewhat more refined sounding, with more detail in the midrange and high frequencies (some would say “astonishing” for closed headphones). The K-271 Studio require a headphone amplifier to reproduce sound properly; they will work without one, but a lot of detail will be missing.

Pioneer has recently launched new models.
SE-MJ30 are a portable supra-aural (on-ear) model, with a fashionable black-red-reflective metal design. Highly efficient, those headphones are a rival to IGrado and the “portable” AKG models, and have the Pioneer signature warm-and-detailed sounding.

Pioneer SE-M390 are the “more serious” portable model, semi-open circumaural (around-the-ear) headphones. For the price, they look like quite the performer.

Audio-Technica’s ATH-A900 are perhaps the best, richest- and fullest-sounding closed headphones in the under-$200 category. They perform equally well as gaming, home theatre, or musical headphones. The -A900 are also very forgiving of the source - they can work just as well with a portable player as with a home stereo system.
